As with all organic amendments, soil microbes must first convert the nutrients into a plant available form, and microbes need time to work. For best results, apply in the fall with other amendments like wool pellets.

Crab shell contains chitin, which stimulates chitinolytic microorganisms in the soil. These microbes enhance nutrient cycling while also suppressing certain chitin-containing pathogens like nematodes and fungi. Chitin also stimulates induced systemic resistance in plants - this is essentially an immune system boost.
